Bob, Bob, oh Bob…what can we say. Beloved winter season bartender, oft’ overlooked on the Hyde Away website.

There’s more to Bob than most people know. Everyone knows he’s been around for a long time, but few people realize just how long. It all started back in the early days, when the Inn opened as the Ulla Lodge.

Bob in the beginning

Of course, in those days, we didn’t know what we know now. Bob has since quit his smoking habit.

Bob - Snow Boy Bob - Party Animal

Bob was a gregarious young man. He loved to party and invited all his friends to Vermont to play the winter away. He was a dapper dresser in those days. This is the guy that put “prep” in the word “preppy.”

One day, after some serious partying, Bob’s friends decided to make him into a snow woman. Was he surprised when he woke up!

Bob was also quite the ladies’ man in the early days.

Bob - Early Hyde Away Years

Once the Ulla Lodge was sold and later became the Snuggery, Bob felt lost. It was a dark period in his life. He wandered aimlessly around the ski towns of the Northeast looking for that special feeling he got from the Ulla Lodge. Finally, in the late ’80s, Bruce Hyde bought the Inn and, after some renovations, re-opened it as the Hyde Away Inn. It took a couple of years for Bob to hear about it, but he finally found his way back to the Mad River Valley and the Inn he loved.

Bob was happy and made friends quickly.

He soon regained his keen sense of fashion…although in a slightly different direction than his preppy roots.

Bob - Fashionista

Now, Bob has been back at the Hyde Away for many years (he’s older than he looks). In fact, he keeps threatening to leave after every season. But, so far, we haven’t been able to get rid of him.

Bob - Fashionista

So, we’ve all resigned ourselves to the fact that Bob will be here forever… hobbling around the bar, searching for his reading glasses like the rest of us. But never to be omitted from the website again.

The End (?)
